ROCKY POINT ROAD
In order to satisfy the brief for this duplex, a design had to be fashioned which would be modern, abstract and fresh while still maintaining practicality and sensibility. The client had also requested a design that would take full advantage of the warm northern sun as well as the cool north-easterly breezes. Privacy was a major factor in the design brief as well as a house that was private, open plan and not the typical rectangle shape that is quite often seen in the manufacture of dual occupancy duplexes. The final request was, in theme of not being the 'typical duplex' that there not be any long, dark, narrow passages throughout the structure, that in fact the opposite was to be achieved. In order to satisfy the design brief, a location responsive concept was produced. It exhibits sharp clean lines, a modern design, but all the while still denotes connotations of family and homeliness. One feature that the house proudly exudes is an interesting form so as not to conform to the normal boring rectangle setup usually seen in duplex set ups. Privacy was achieved by creating central courtyards and ensuring that the top balconies were placed on the outer corners of the building. The design for the upper floor was created with shape and light in mind. The combination of louvred and celestory windows perfectly defeated the issue of the lack of light and also took full advantage of seaside location. The large entry was illuminated by the aforementioned first level windows via a large void on the first floor that drew the light down.
